Hemophilia
is a rare bleeding disorder caused by deficiency of clotting factors such as
VIII and IX. It is an X-linked recessive disorder, which is more prevalent in
males than in females. It is estimated that it affects around 400,000 people
per year.
The two
major types of hemophilia are A and B. Hemophilia A, also called as classical
hemophilia or factor VIII deficiency hemophilia, is caused by deficiency of
clotting factor VIII. It is transmitted genetically from parent to child during
birth. Recombinant clotting factors or plasma-derived clotting factors are
being developed for the treatment of this disorder.
