Seroquel
(quetiapine; AstraZeneca) is a dibenzothiazepine derivative that has broad
receptor activity and a relatively high affinity for serotonin 5-HT2A receptors
over D1 and D2. Quetiapine also has affinity at H1, M1, a1 and a2 adrenergic
receptor sites. Although the drug was originally developed in 1985, Seroquel
did not receive FDA marketing approval until 1997. After later launching in
Germany in 2000, Seroquel became a widely used atypical antipsychotic for
severe acute manic episodes and schizophrenia.
